Editorial Standards

Non-Sponsored Content Policy

Version 4.2 — January 2026
Issued By: Editorial Review Committee
This policy applies to all non-sponsored editor and staff post submissions. All decisions are final and at the sole discretion of the Editorial Review Committee.
Section 1: Definition of Non-Sponsored Content

Non-sponsored content is defined as any article, report, analysis, or editorial feature submitted for publication as a staff-written or editor-approved post without direct payment from the subject company, its affiliates, or its representatives. Non-sponsored content must adhere to journalistic standards of independence, transparency, and reader utility. Content that profiles a company, its leadership, its research, or its products will be evaluated under stricter scrutiny to prevent advertorial or public relations material from appearing as independent journalism.

Section 2: Prohibited Content Types

The following content types are automatically rejected for non-sponsored placement:

  • Company Biographies — Any article whose primary subject is the history, founding, leadership structure, or internal operations of a single for-profit company. This includes profiles of executives, timelines of corporate milestones, descriptions of office locations, and organizational charts.
  • Undisclosed Affiliate Promotions — Any article that recommends products, services, or providers without a clear, prominent disclosure of any financial incentive, including affiliate commissions, referral fees, sponsored content agreements, or equity positions.
  • Research Without Methodology — Any article that cites proprietary surveys, polls, or data sets without providing full methodological disclosure, including sample size, margin of error, field dates, demographic breakdowns, and funding sources.
  • Self-Promotional Framing — Any article that uses laudatory language about the subject company, including phrases such as "trusted voice," "industry leader," "notable provider," "helped shape," "carved out its identity," "established itself," or similar promotional adjectives.
  • Content Without Reader Utility — Any article that offers no actionable advice, practical takeaways, or verifiable information for the intended audience. Articles that function as press releases, corporate announcements, or industry gossip without clear reader benefit will be rejected.
Section 3: Disclosure Requirements

All non-sponsored submissions must include the following disclosures where applicable:

3.1 Affiliate Disclosure

If the subject company or any referenced provider earns revenue through affiliate commissions, referral fees, or paid placements, the article must include a disclosure at the top stating: "The company profiled in this article may earn commissions from purchases made through links in this content."

3.2 Research Methodology Disclosure

Any cited survey or proprietary data set must include the following information in the article or as a linked appendix:

  • Sample size (number of respondents)
  • Margin of error
  • Field dates (start and end dates of data collection)
  • Geographic scope
  • Demographic breakdown (age, gender, income, education, etc.)
  • Funding source for the research
  • Whether any compensation was provided to respondents
3.3 Conflict of Interest Disclosure

If the author, the submitting organization, or the subject company has any financial, professional, or personal relationship that could reasonably be perceived as biasing the content, that relationship must be disclosed in writing before submission.

Section 4: Independent Verification Standards

Non-sponsored content must include at least two of the following three elements:

4.1 Third-Party Expert Commentary

Quotes or analysis from individuals unaffiliated with the subject company, including academics, industry analysts, consumer advocates, or regulatory officials. Commentary must be attributed by name and affiliation.

4.2 Independent Data Sources

References to data from government agencies, academic institutions, or recognized independent research organizations to verify or contextualize claims made by the subject company.

4.3 Opposing Viewpoints

If the article makes positive claims about the subject company's products, research, or market position, it must include a countervailing perspective from a credible source with relevant expertise. This may include consumer complaints, regulatory actions, competitor criticisms, or academic skepticism.

Section 5: Outlet-Specific Requirements

Submissions must be tailored to the specific editorial standards of each target publication. Generic articles submitted to multiple outlets simultaneously will be rejected.

5.1 Consumer Advice Outlets

Articles must provide actionable, step-by-step guidance for readers. No corporate profiles or research summaries without practical applications. All data must be verifiable and presented in accessible language.

5.2 Business and Trade Outlets

Articles must include financial data, market analysis, or industry-specific news. Company profiles are not acceptable without exclusive reporting or proprietary financial information. Timeliness is required. Evergreen corporate biographies will be rejected.

5.3 Culture and Lifestyle Outlets

Articles must match the tone, voice, and cultural register of the target publication. Corporate or academic framing is not acceptable for lifestyle audiences. Submissions must offer a point of view, critique, or cultural commentary beyond neutral reporting.

5.4 General News Outlets

Articles must meet rigorous journalistic standards, including independent sourcing and opposing viewpoints. Self-promotional content is prohibited. Research citations must include full methodology and third-party verification.

Section 6: Prohibited Language and Phrases

The following phrases and language patterns are prohibited in non-sponsored content. Submissions containing these will be rejected without opportunity for resubmission.

  • "Trusted voice"
  • "Industry leader"
  • "Notable provider"
  • "Helped shape"
  • "Carved out its identity"
  • "Established itself"
  • "Game-changer"
  • "Revolutionary"
  • "Award-winning" (without independent third-party verification)
  • "The go-to resource"
  • "One of the most respected"
  • "Market authority"
  • "Unbiased" (unless accompanied by full disclosure of business model)
Section 7: Resubmission Guidelines
7.1 Single Resubmission Allowed

Authors may resubmit a rejected article once within 30 days of the rejection date. Resubmissions must address all specific concerns raised in the rejection notice.

7.2 Resubmission Fee

No fee applies. However, resubmissions that do not substantively address the original rejection reasons will be permanently rejected.

7.3 Separate Articles for Separate Outlets

A single article submitted to multiple outlets will be rejected from all outlets unless the article is demonstrably tailored to each outlet's specific audience and editorial standards.

Section 8: Enforcement and Review
8.1 Editorial Discretion

All decisions regarding non-sponsored content are final and at the sole discretion of the Editorial Review Committee and the respective partner publication's editorial team.

8.2 Appeals Process

Authors may submit a written appeal within 7 days of a rejection. Appeals must include a line-by-line response to each rejection reason. Appeals are reviewed by a senior editor not involved in the original decision. Approval of appeals is rare and granted only for clear procedural errors.

8.3 Policy Updates

This policy is reviewed quarterly. The January 2026 version (v4.2) supersedes all previous versions. Submissions received after the effective date are governed by this policy regardless of when the submission was drafted.

Section 9: Acknowledgment

By submitting content for non-sponsored placement, authors and submitting organizations acknowledge that they have read, understood, and agree to be bound by this Non-Sponsored Content Policy v4.2 / January 2026. Violations may result in a permanent ban from submitting to all partner publications.
